Passy Mubalama

Founder, Executive Director –  Action & Development Initiative for the Protection of Women & Children

Ms. Passy Mubalama is a pro-democracy and women’s rights activist with over 7 years of experience in promoting democracy, human rights, good governance and the rule of law in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). She is Founder and Executive director of Action and Development Initiative for the Protection of Women and Children affected by conflict (AIDPROFEN), a nonprofit organization that promotes women’s rights in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC.

Her personal experiences reporting human rights violations from Goma’s Internal Displaced Population camps inspired her in 2011 to found AIDPROFEN and support women and girls survivors of sexual violence victims of conflict in the eastern Congo. She founded The Education Center on Democracy and Human Rights in the DRC to advocate for the right of women and children affected by conflict.

The DRC has been a war-torn country for more than 20 years—the conflict being the deadliest since World War II, with more than 8 million dead since 1996.

“Growing up in conflict has given me the kind of courage that no one can imagine. I have witnessed poverty, human rights violations, rapes, killings, murder, children in the street, destruction all around me, and all consequences that come with war, which has led some of my peers to lose hope.I have seen war first-hand and my work has exposed me to the misery and atrocities of communities (women and children).”

Passy has a degree in Management for Development in DRC, a Certificate in Human Rights by Equitas in Canada and Certificate in Civic leadership at the University of Delaware.

For her notable work to promote women rights in DRC, Ms, Mubalama received in 2014 a Mandela Washington Fellowship from the Young African Leaders Initiative and 2018 the Reagan Fascell Democracy fellowship award in Washington DC
